HUMAL Workflow Publication

The HUMAL workflow collection presents, step by step, how humanities research proceeds from research questions through data collection and processing to analysis and interpretation of results. The descriptions help other researchers learn from existing research practices, understand the reasons behind methodological and tool choices, and plan their own research. Researchers, students, and research groups can also publish descriptions of their own workflows in HUMAL using a shared description template. Submitted workflows undergo review before publication, helping to improve their scholarly quality, clarity, and reusability. The service supports open science and makes research processes more transparent and reproducible.

How to use the service?
Published workflows can be freely accessed on the HUMAL website. To publish a workflow, the author must complete the HUMAL workflow description form and submit the description to the Lab. Before publication, the author receives feedback from two reviewers on the scholarly quality, clarity, and structure of the workflow.

Publicly available and free.
Connected services of ERCDI
The service is operational but continues to be developed. In the next phase, workflow descriptions will be more closely linked to the code, data, and tools needed to implement them, as well as to the HUMAL analysis environment under development. The workflow service could be connected to E-varamu, where researchers can discover cultural and research data needed for their work, and to DataCite Estonia services, through which published research data can receive persistent identifiers and become citable. In the future, the workflow collection will be closely connected to the HUMAL analysis environment, where technical components of workflows can be executed and reused, workflow publication will take place via the HUMAL register from 2027.
